 A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COMPANY
Sylvan Equipment Corp. was founded by Sylvan Greenbaum in the early 1930's. For many years the company rented small construction equipment consisting primarily of pumps and air compressors. The rental business increased substantially in the 50' and 60' under the management of Buddy Wolman. By 1970 Sylvan was one of the largest rental houses on the Eastern seaboard, supplying air compressors, generators and welding machines to the construction and marine industries. After the death of Sylvan Greenbaum and his wife Bertha, the company was purchased by Elliot and Lynn Prigozen on September 30,1980. With a new management team, Sylvan Equipment Corp. expanded its lines of equipment to include aerial work platforms and began a period of steady growth. In 1985 Sylvan opened its first branch in New Jersey, followed by a further expansion to Newburgh, NY in 1989.
A new era began in 1992 when Sylvan became the "Bobcat" dealer for the NYC area. Rapid expansion has taken place since then with new branches opened in Westbury and Holtsville, L.I. In 1998 we were appointed as the Bobcat dealer for Dade and Monroe counties in Florida.
In November 1999 NationsRent of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. a national rental company purchased the rental business of Sylvan Equipment.
Bobcat of NY’s President Todd Prigozen and his brother, Vice President Sage Prigozen, follow in the footsteps of their parents, Elliot and Lynn, who served the equipment needs of New York contractors and landscapers for decades.
Now the family business has entered a new century, evolving to become Bobcat of NY with five locations — Briarcliff Manor, Maspeth and Medford in New York. In Florida, there is a branch in Hialeah Gardens, serving the Metro Dade area. In 2008 a branch was opened in London, England — making Bobcat of NY an international company. They attribute this expansion to a combination of highly personalized service and willingness to grow with the times.
